Caux Conference for
Business and Industry

The  Ninth Annual Junior Round Table Conference
Globalization:  From Conflict to Opportunity
Caux, Switzerland – July 20-24, 2002

Why globalization?  The Middle East, September 11th 2001, Enron, Genoa.  Separate, yet related events.  Each focusing attention on the potential and the peril of this trend known as globalization.  Over the past several years, significant progress has been made on many important global issues, including debt relief, health care, and education. At the same time, increasing numbers of the world’s poorest still lack access to basic needs, the environment continues to buckle under industrial expansion, and despair has replaced hope as communities struggle to compete in the global marketplace.  The time is right for honest conversations on how people in business and industry can promote freedom, democracy and justice on a local and a global level.

Program: The Junior Round Table (JRT) meets during the annual Caux Conference for Business and Industry, which attracts business leaders and practitioners from around the world to discuss topics of current interest. The JRT forum will draw on the expertise of invited speakers and the combined experiences of those participating to develop a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding global responsibility.  In addition, a case study, involving both role-play and discussion, will provide an opportunity to work through the issues presented in a very practical way.  We plan to attract between 20 and 30 participants. The exchange of ideas and experiences will aim at practical results and be action driven. The tentative program for each day is attached.

Location and timing: The meeting will take place July 20-24, 2002 at Mountain House, an international conference center situated high above Montreux, Switzerland, overlooking beautiful Lake Geneva.  The conference center is owned and operated by the Swiss Foundation of Initiatives of Change.

What you will get out of it? The Junior Round Table conferences combine discussions on topics that typically go beyond your daily work with an opportunity to network with professionals from around the world. Participants place a high value on business principles and the belief that individually we each have a role to play in creating an ethical business environment.  The JRT network provides an ongoing opportunity to share ideas and receive support in our own professions and settings.

What you will put into it. The JRT meetings benefit most when individuals bring their own experiences, questions, and concerns to the table for discussion.  We plan to achieve practical goals and follow-up actions. A conference fee of Swiss Francs 730 (US$450 / EUR 500) is asked. This covers the costs of registration (Swiss Francs 250), room, and board during the five days of the conference (Swiss Francs 120 per night).

This conference is organized by the Junior Round Table (JRT). The JRT is an informal network of young professionals with various backgrounds and occupations. Members come from all over the world, are active in economic or business life, and have some five to ten years of work experience. The JRT sets for itself the goal of inspiring its members through the exchange of ideas, beliefs, and experiences. Its purposes include: improving the understanding and collaboration between individuals of various backgrounds and nationalities, broadening the perspective on economic and social issues in small and large businesses, asserting the need for effective business principles and evaluating their practical application, and encouraging the members both as individuals and working as a team to take initiatives going beyond their day to day employment. The JRT network currently consists of over 130 people in twenty-five countries.
